About Driwind
In The
Beginning -
DRIWIND was established in the 1980's as a small hobby kennel, training,
showing, and breeding Australian Shepherds. DRIWIND is a permanently
registered kennel name with the Australian Shepherd Club of America.
While our Aussies are first and foremost our best friends and
constant companions, we are no longer breeding or competing; Cinda is no longer
teaching or boarding. We are,
however, always available to help you with questions or to find an Aussie that fits your wants and lifestyle.
With today's economy what it is, more and more people are turning their dogs in
to shelters and breed rescue groups because they can no longer care for their
beloved pets. Therefore, we encourage anyone not planning to show in
regular conformation to consider a
rescue Aussie. Of course, we are always
happy to discuss this as well as Aussies (or just dogs in general) with you.
The Rest of the
Story -
When we moved to El Paso
we bought property that was a little more rural than most of the
neighborhoods. We wanted to have some room for the dogs to romp
and play and for Cinda to set up agility and obedience training
equipment. Ha! Little did we know!
Just two years later, after taking our granddaughter to visit a nearby alpaca
ranch, we found ourselves to be the proud owners of two pregnant alpacas.
Down came the dog kennels! Up went fences and shelters!
(With a little help from a "friend"!)

Then autumn two years later we had twins! So as our tiny herd grew and grew some
more, we found we needed to put up more fences. There suddenly was
great need to do more separating of animals than we originally had in
the plans.
Gary's job now finds him out of town more than at home, but I am blessed at this
point to have two of our three sons living at home again. Both boys have
"real" jobs but are usually home in the evenings and on weekends to help with
any heavy chores, like bringing in the hay for the next twelve months and
putting up fences.
Care of the alpacas is usually a family affair. Everyone joins in when
nails or teeth need to be trimmed or vaccinations given. And in the
evening even our granddaughter enjoys helping with chores.
It won't be
long though before we'll need to be looking for a larger place so that our herd
will have room to continue growing. Meanwhile, please feel free to stop
and visit with us at any time. Just give us a call first so we
know to expect you and can give you easy directions to find us.
We're always glad to show off our alpacas and/or show you how to trim
teeth and nails, give vaccinations, discuss what we feed and why . . .
you name it.
Look
forward to seeing you soon!

Everything
that happens on the farm does so under the watchful eye of our "barn boss",
Bella, who
with the help of her two sisters, Mouse and Precious, keeps mice, lizards, bugs and birds at bay.
Together these three are often seen working as a team to chase off a stray cat
or the neighbors' dog away from the fence-line.
